Gazelle ebikes are not the cheapest, but are pretty much the highest quality and highest specification electric bikes available in the UK. Compare their details with those of their rivals carefully and you will soon realise why you get what you pay for.
With Gazelle you get the same renowned quality and high specification that you would receive on their standard bikes. Gazelle also put a lot of thought into their styling – to achieve the streamlined and integrated look of a classic Dutch bike, rather than the scruffy ‘bolt on’ appearance that leaves most of their rivals looking like over-decorated xmas trees! This philosophy of total integration translates into a beautiful ride even with the power switched off. Not something most other ebikes can claim.
The Gazelle Innergy system uses a front wheel hub motor and a discreetly mounted battery pack that sits under the rear carrier. The entire system is manufactured in Western Europe – so no cheapo Chinese stuff with unsubstantiated performance claims!
Responding to consumer feedback that all front hub motor systems lack the pulling power of the alternative chain drive mid motor systems, Gazelle have developed the XT motor, with massively improved torque. The claim is that torque is increased by 200%, from 15 Nm to 45Nm. This system is available on selected Innergy models, to offer powerful gradient bashing wherever it is required.
The Orange Plus Innergy XT is a high quality city ebike with a high torque (XT) front hub motor, a classic Dutch town bike equipped with a seven speed hub gear and pedal assist. Go for this if you want to cycle in flattish terrain - though being an ebike with extra grunt, it will obviously cope with hills much more easily regardless of the number of gears. The Orange model is distinguished by rounder tubing and a curvier frame than the Chamonix. The cost depends on the level of battery power that you choose:
Orange Plus Innergy XT with bronze battery £1824.99
Orange Plus Innergy XT with silver battery £1899.99
Orange Plus Innergy XT with gold battery £1959.99
Orange Plus Innergy XT with platinum battery: £2139.99
It's Plus level specification is distinguished by having a suspension (rather than a rigid) fork; hub brakes front and rear; a simple control system for the electrical assist (more on which below); a graphic LCD display and control panel; and a slightly improved level of trim over the Pure throughout the rest of the bike - including a mudguard mounted front light. The result is a fully equipped, comfy, upright, very high quality city bike.
How it works
Plus models, like Pure models, have a simple system using a rotation sensor to detect forward rotation of the pedals and switch on the motor. The motor delivers a constant level of support, which the rider will feel right from the start of pedalling. This contrasts with the higher spec Xtra and Excellent models which deliver a more variable level of support. The overall level of assistance can be changed - from Eco (maximum range) to Normal, or to Boost (maximum assist), depending on the riding condtions. On Plus models, the handlebar display has the functions of a classic cycle computer (speed, trip distances etc), plus giving the rider information about the remaining battery power and what assistance mode is active.
The XT motor uses internal gearing to achieve a huge increase in torque driving the front wheel (45Nm compared to 15Nm from the standard Innergy hub). Should you require assistance in climbing steep hills, it will be delivered in abundance.

Axa frame locks
All Gazelles have a frame lock fitted at the rear of the bike, which immobilises the rear wheel at the flick of a lever. This means that an opportunist thief will have to carry your pride and joy away. If you use it in conjunction with a good D-lock, you have great security.
The lock always comes with 2 keys - if you lose them or damage them, all is not lost. We have outlined all you need to know here.
