Gazelle ebikes are not the cheapest, but are pretty much the highest quality and highest specification electric bikes available in the UK. Compare their details with those of their rivals carefully and you will soon realise why you get what you pay for.

With Gazelle you get the same renowned quality and high specification that you would receive on their standard bikes. Gazelle also put a lot of thought into their styling – to achieve the streamlined and integrated look of a classic Dutch bike, rather than the scruffy ‘bolt on’ appearance that leaves most of their rivals looking like over-decorated xmas trees!  This philosophy of total integration translates into a beautiful ride even with the power switched off. Not something most other ebikes can claim.

The Gazelle Innergy system uses a front wheel hub motor and a discreetly mounted battery pack that sits under the rear carrier. The entire system is manufactured in Western Europe – so no cheapo Chinese stuff with unsubstantiated performance claims!

Responding to consumer feedback that all front hub motor systems lack the pulling power of the alternative chain drive mid motor systems, Gazelle have developed the XT motor, with massively improved torque. The claim is that torque is increased by 200%, from 15 Nm to 45Nm. This system is available on selected Innergy models, to offer  powerful gradient bashing wherever it is required.

The Medeo Xtra Innergy XT is a multi-geared trekking ebike with front suspension, classic curvy styling and a new high torque (XT) hub motor. Like its more angular companion - the Fuente, it's basically a Dutch touring ebike equipped with 24 speed derailleur gears, but it differs in offering super low maintenance hub brakes. Go for this if you want a capable low maintenance bike for longer distance cycling or to handle hills - which it will easily cope with. This model is built with a suspension fork for extra comfort and more rounded curves than the Fuente. The cost depends on the level of battery power that you choose:

Medeo Xtra Innergy XT with bronze battery £2094.99
Medeo Xtra Innergy XT with silver battery £2169.99
Medeo Xtra Innergy XT with gold battery £2229.99
Medeo Xtra Innergy XT with platinum battery: £2409.99

Its Xtra level specification is distinguished by having a supension (rather than a rigid) fork; a sophisticated control system for the electrical assist (more on which below), including a backlit, graphic LCD control and display unit; a blazing Fendervision front lamp integrated into the front mudguard; and a luxurious level of trim throughout the bike. As you'd expect, it's a fully equipped, super-comfy, upright, very high quality trekking bike.

How it works:
A dual sensor detects forward rotation of the pedals and also measures how much force you put into the pedals. The more force you apply to the pedals, such as when climbing a hill, the more power is delivered by the electric motor up to the mode limit.  Choose from ECO (maximum range), NORMAL or BOOST mode (maximum assist) to limit how much power is delivered. There is also a mode for less powerful riders which switches on power assistance at a lower pedal torque level. The XT motor uses internal gearing to achieve a huge increase in torque driving the front wheel (45Nm compared to 15Nm from the standard Innergy hub).  Should you require assistance in climbing steep hills, it will be delivered in abundance.

The LCD control and display unit is handlebar mounted and shows the mode selected, battery reserve, speed, number of kilometres travelled and allows you to set the desired mode at the touch of a button. When it gets dark, you can turn the powerful lights on from the display, which is also backlit.  Power levels associated with each mode can be programmed to the desired level by your dealer to give you more or less assistance, depending on your needs and the terrain that you ride in etc.

Axa frame locks

All Gazelles have a frame lock fitted at the rear of the bike, which immobilises the rear wheel at the flick of a lever. This means that an opportunist thief will have to carry your pride and joy away. If you use it in conjunction with a good D-lock, you have great security.

The lock always comes with 2 keys - if you lose them or damage them, all is not lost. We have outlined all you need to know here.
