Everyday bikes for long distance commuting
A long distance commute can be anything from five to thirty, or more, miles - in short, the kind of ride to work that you are likely to wear cycle specific clothing for. Not only do you have to be a fairly committed cyclist to regularly make such a journey, but your equipment needs to be up to scratch. If you're doing this kind of mileage day in and day out you are going to want a bike that is pretty durable, so we would not recommend race oriented machines where everything is sacrificed at the altar of weight reduction. But, you also need to be on time, so you do need something fast - so we'd direct you towards sportier models. Commuters also need something that's quite practical - a bike that can take mudguards to protect the machinery and the rider from adverse weather; as well as one that can carry some luggage.
Here's selection of twelve bikes that we recommend for longer commutes. They range from the sporty hybrids and cross bikes at the chunkier end of things, through to road bikes. What they all have in common is the ability to take mudguards and racks and to allow the rider some degree of speed (although this is obviously relative to the type of bike that you are considering).
If you are looking for something fast, aerodynamic and light, then consider the sports tourers featured below - such as the Mercury, the Fratello or Gran Fondo. If you are happy with something a bit more chunky and upright (for the shorter end of this scale), then look at the Gazelle Ultimate Excellent. If your trip involves a bit of rough terrain then consider the Genesis Day One Alfine. They are all superb bikes - one should suit you.
The ultimate commuter can be anything fast and light, but practicalities such as the ability to fit a rack are important.
Mudguard clearance is a must if you want to maintain the condition of your bike, as well as your clothing.
