Women's Utility Bikes

For everyday comfort, style and convenience

York is the natural habitat of utility bikes - aka town bikes. By this, we mean a fully equipped machine that allows you to go about your everyday business with the minimum of fuss. And by ‘women’s town bike’ we mean the kind of traditional ‘open frame’ that allows you to step through the frame when mounting and dismounting. Of course, people of any gender can also benefit from this feature!

These bike designs prioritise short term comfort and convenience over weight, as they are not designed to be ridden over long distances (most utility type trips in York rarely take longer than 20 minutes). So... this means an upright bike that will be comfortable to ride in everyday clothes without having to make any sartorial compromises. It will also be able to carry lots of stuff; is up to the job of being used and abused daily and is a bike that will be useful and comortable to ride at all hours, in any weather.

The most perfect five-star-for-utility embodiment of a town bike is a Gazelle Dutch roadster. These are more than well equipped to satisfy all of the above requirements. More specifically, in terms of features, they will come with hub gears (at least 7 recommended), which involve minimal maintenance as all the workings are enclosed within the rear hub. Combined with a chaincase, which encloses the chain, you gain the twin benefits of protecting the machinery from the weather and your clothing from the machinery! (Look out also, for clothes guards on supeior models - which add an extra element of protection).

Lights will come equipped as standard – ideally in the form of a dynamo, which is fantastic, as they enable you to generate the energy for the lights as you travel, making them both convenient and environmentally friendly. Better still, they are permanently attached to the bike, thus avoiding the multiple plagues of loss, theft, battery drain, and forgetfulness that you get with battery lights. Also, strong racks with straps to carry lots of luggage and a kickstand to keep the bike stable when parking up and unloading. Good also... to be equippped with puncture-resistant tyres, as no one has time for punctures when they're late for an appointment. Finally, a frame lock for instant and convenient security. These are quick to use, so great for ‘just popping in’ places as they prevent your bike becoming a getaway vehicle! Use with an extension cable or a D lock for longer periods.
